What is the Troop Committee?
Like all Scout units, Troop 37 has a Committee to support the Scouts in getting the best program possible. The Committee functions very much like the board of directors would at any corporation. One of the central themes of Scouting is that its units are led by the Scouts; the adult leaders are there to provide guidance and appropriate supervision. The Committee, and the parents who make it up, provide administrative support to the Troop organization.
When does the Committee meet?
We usually meet on the First Monday of every month, at 7:30 pm at the Saint Teresa’s Parish House. Our meetings have a preset meeting agenda and seldom last longer than one and a half hours. Members are always asked by the Committee Chairperson to forward any items they would like to add to the agenda well in advance of the meeting, so we avoid surprises.
Who can attend Committee meetings?
All parents of registered Scouts, or interested parents of prospective Scouts, are very welcome and are encouraged to attend.
What’s an example of a meeting Agenda?
We review Troop finances and upcoming expenses. Our Scoutmaster delivers a summary on the overall condition of the Troop, and can request additional equipment, support, or funding if needed. Upcoming events are discussed in detail and are coordinated, and the Committee ensures that funding and appropriate leadership resources are in place to make those events possible.
Who can join the Troop Committee?
There are a number of key positions that must always be filled on the Troop Committee. They are:
The Committee Chairperson (CC)
The Charter Organization Representative (COR)
Registered Adult leaders are also on the Committee by default.
All parents are invited and encouraged to join the Committee.
The leadership of Troop 37 strives to be as welcoming, inclusive, and transparent as possible. Although we encourage all interested parents to join the Committee, you are not required to join in order to attend our meetings, or to volunteer by sharing your time and talents with the Troop.
Why should I join the Committee?
All Troop 37 Committee members are also BSA-registered adults with the Troop. As a registered and actively engaged adult, you can have a tremendous impact on the Troop program and have a lot of fun too! BSA regulations require “two-deep” leadership for all Scouting activities, which is at least one trained adult (preferably but not always a Troop leader) and one other adult. More trained, registered adults and leaders will give us more flexibility. As an active Committee member, you will also have a say in how the Troop is managed.
All adult registrants in the BSA are required to first complete an online course called “Youth Protection Training” which is offered by the BSA (approximately thirty minutes). You must also consent to undergo a mandatory background check by the BSA. Upon completion of those requirements, you are registered.
Our Committee members are also expected to complete two other brief online courses from the BSA: “Troop Committee Challenge,” which explains how the Committee functions, and “This is Scouting,” which is an overview of the entire Scouting organization. All BSA online training is free of charge.
